The first ever record for this species in Warwickshire was made by Alec Kolaj using the SAL pheromone lure at Brandon Marsh in July 2020. This was quickly followed by two other records, one at Ryton Pools Country Park and a third also at Brandon Marsh in the same month.

The Sallow Clearwing was first discovered in Britain in 1926 and occurs in central southern England.

It can be found in damp woodland and marshland where the larval foodplant Sallow (Salix sp.) grow. The moths are on the wing in June and July.

Larval Foodplants

The larval foodplant is Sallow (Salix sp.). The larvae live within the stems of the foodplant forming a distinctive gall. It is belived that the species has a two-year lifecycle with adult moths usually on the wing on even years. This is yet to be proven here in Warwickshire, so it will be interested if they are recorded again in 2021?

With the increased use of pheromones, the Sallow Clearwing is likley to be found right across our region.

2020 - Alec Kolaj had the first Sallow Clearwing (a male) to be recorded in Warwickshire using the SAL lure at Brandon Marsh in July.
2020 - Ben Coleman recorded the second sighting in the county; a male to the SAL lure at Ryton Pools Country Park also in July.
2020 - Paul Cashmore recorded the second sighting in the county; a male to the SAL lure at Brandon Marsh on the 21st July.
